Heck even if they can kill you, someone like Helly likely doesn't care since she still tried to resign after being told that this half of her would essentially "die". With that in mind, they obviously also can't do anything that might kill you, imagine the backlash if an incident like that happened and went public. The fourth episode is titled ‘The You You Are’ and opens with Helly continuing her time in the break room. They can't torture you in any way since Lumos has a responsibility for your body while at work (evident from Mark getting a VIP card with a minor injury). There's literally nothing they can do to you. By refusing to read, you even get an added bonus of wasting the other person's time since they need to be there to monitor the polygraph. I mean.there's nothing stopping you from just not reading the thing besides not letting you leave the room, which really isn't an incentive for someone who doesn't want to work there at all. Especially for someone like Helly (probably would work on Irving for example). Finally, after nearly two days of torture in the Break Room, she is contrite enough to be. One thing to note is the people hear voices while the process is going on. Helly is stuck in a never-ending loop of apologies and admonishments. You've asked a reasonable question and there are just small clues in the show that hint there's more going on in the Break Room, which makes it a bad experience. After watching episode 3, I just noticed that the Break Room really doesn't do a lot in stopping troublesome behavior. Episode 1 comes alive about 40 minutes into its 57-minute run time, when Devon and her partner Ricken host a no-dinner party, full of deep, intellectual conversations, bringing up the ethical. I don't know why people are downvoting you.
